Fun on wheels is in Music City! Nashville Junior Roller Derby is now recruiting players, referees and league organizers for the 2012 season. Girls ages 10-17 are invited to join us as either players or referees. Boys from 10-17 are welcome to participate by training to be members of our officiating crew. Whether you're an experienced skater or a newbie who has never strapped on wheels, we will teach you all the skills you need to be a top notch player or an eagle-eyed referee. Roller derby is an exciting way to have fun, make friends and get fit! Visit the Contact Us page and fill out the form on the bottom. We'll send you more info! |
Who is NJRD?
Nashville Junior Roller Derby is a non-profit founded by a retired Nashville Rollergirl and head referee. Our mission is to nurture self-confidence in young women by developing teamwork and athletic ability while encouraging individuality within a culture of discipline, sisterhood, and stewardship through the competitive sport of roller derby.
What can I expect if I join?
You can expect to learn everything about roller derby! From skating and falling properly to knowing the rules, we'll be there to teach you everything you need to know through teamwork. Many of the current Nashville Roller Girl members and staff will be coaching and assisting, so rest assured, you'll be learning from the best!
What will I need to get started?
You will need your parents' permission, first and foremost. Other than that, you will need to be covered under their insurance, along with purchasing USARs insurance. You can download a Registration Packet and USARS form here:

As for equipment, you will need quad skates (absolutely no inline skates, unless you plan on being a referee!), a mouth guard, a helmet, and a set of pads (elbow, wrist, and knee). A great source for all of these things is Asphalt Beach, in East Nashville. We've already talked to Steve and he is ready to help get you exactly what you need, with a discount for NJRD girls!
When are practices?
We practice at The Tennessee State Fairgrounds in the Sports Arena. Practices will be from 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays as follows:
Beginner Skaters:
6:00 - 6:40 pm - Track time
6:40 - 7:00 pm - Plyos/exercises
7:00 - 7:15 pm - Rules review
Advanced Skaters:
6:30 - 7:00 pm- Plyometrics/warm-up
7:00 - 7:30 pm - Drills and training (Levels 2 and 3)
7:30 - 8:00 pm - Level 3 scrimmage time
We ask that girls make at least one practice a week. If you have not turned in your Registration Packet and USARS form, you may do so at your first practice. Make sure to bring all forms, a copy of your birth certificate (or driver's license for my older girls) and a check made out to USARS for $35 - make sure the USARS form is dated for the first day you come to practice!) Dues are $25 a month.
Parents, we need you, too!
We will need help organizing, recruiting, and supervising our practices and event. Please join our forum (separate from your son or daughter) and let us know if you can give a helping hand!
